Connecting with Previous Students – Job Search References

I thought Kristin made some interesting points about how to start networking especially with past students who graduated before you or attended a previous school that you did. I transferred from Keene State in NH to Framingham State as a junior – with taking multiple graphic design classes at two different places I met a lot of people that I lost touch with after transferring. Her advice about how to connect with them via LinkedIn and see what they are doing, where they work, etc was a great idea! Many of them have their portfolios or websites attached to their site so I am able to check out their most current work since I last saw them. She was very insightful and gave me some starting points for references after I graduate this spring.

Liquid Art House – Boston, MA

I was watching Chronicle on the Boston news station News Channel 5 last night and they had a special about places to go for a night out in the city. One restaurant they talked about was the Liquid Art House on Arlington St – a gallery/dining restaurant that incorporates food, art and design into its experience. They have exhibitions every so often with amazing, modern art from around the area and many of the pieces inside you are able to purchase, ranging from furniture to actual art to flatware.

Anyways, the reason I am posting this is that after I watched the segment about them, I Googled it to see their website. And I fell in love! The layout of the whole website was so appealing – the bold type that makes up the restaurant’s initials caught my eye and how each of the drop down menus makes up a well-known phrase: Eat your (He)ART out. How clever!! Each of these tabs leads you to more info about the restaurant. I was impressed! The site is also filled with beautiful photographs of the location and food and the collage layout of the homepage is very well put together. I wish I knew who designed it so I could further check out their portfolio. It definitely gave me some good ideas on how I could push the boundaries a little more with my online portfolio or even doing web design for a client someday.

Check out the site – I’m sure the restaurant is just as eye-pleasing!

Tyler Finck, Graphic Designer Portfolio

I chose this designer’s portfolio because I was captivated by all the different photos he had for each of the designs he created that went on different mediums. For this beer brand Ithaca Beer, he included photos of the label, box packaging, cardboard boxes, logo, typefaces and paper products. I enjoyed seeing the continuation of the logo and label design being carried out in numerous places. The photos ranged from full screen photos to angled views on a blank backdrop, and even some artistic layouts of the beer bottles themselves.

BRIGADE – San Fran Granola and SVEDKA Portfolio Layout

I always really enjoyed the way my former summer internship location, BRIGADE, lays out their online portfolio with how they describe and display the designs they’ve produced for their clients. Based from Hadley, Massachusetts, BRIGADE has worked with many well-known clients around the United States, some of these including SVEDKA Vodka, San Fran Granola and Black Birch Wines. I particularly enjoy their San Fran Granola and SVEDKA portfolio work layouts that display the designs they created for products, packaging, ads, etc.

SAN FRAN GRANOLA’s use of large and full-screen, clear resolution photos makes the product stand out, with the design and logo even more so. Using color photos gives the viewer an insight to what the flavors are and how they’re being shown by the different color bags. The bags are all placed to be photographed on a white background, however the logo has white type on a colored background to stand out to the viewer.

SVEDKA uses both large and cropped color photos to showcase the branding being used on multiple mediums, including billboards, vehicles, pamphlets, recipe cards, product tags, etc. The vibrant color themes for each flavor/drink is appealing and inviting, and the color high-resolution photos strongly display the design work well also. 3-D objects like the glass vodka bottle itself or the cardboard display case are shown in their original layout based on a white background. The photos of their designs are always clear, distinct and visually interesting that keeps your eye engaged.

Vibrant colors of design work and strong photographs to display their work are two key elements that work best in producing an online portfolio. Also – varying the amount of close up and full size photos to showcase design work is important to letting the viewer see as many sides of the piece as possible when they aren’t able to tangibly view it in person.

DKNG Studios is a graphic design and illustration studio based out of Los Angeles that works with identity development, print & poster design, custom illustration, packaging design, apparel design, web design & development. Dan Kuhlken and Nathan Goldman combined their talents together in 2005 to launch DKNG studios, where both were greatly influenced and drawn to music, film and design early on in their lives. Some of their well known clients include Disney Channel, Taco Bell, HBO Network, Maxim, Men’s Health and ABC Family.

Similarly to Methane Studios, I came across this company through their Instagram and really enjoyed their style: the range of vibrant colors, simplistic forms and bold faces they use throughout their posters.
